A Moment or Three of Silence

Steve Gilliard, a guy who was one of my daily reads for about four years, has passed away after a long hospitalization at the far too young age of 41. His first blog post at his own site said it all for his admirers:

"If you've read me at Daily Kos and NetSlaves, then you know what to expect. If not, it's really simple: I say what I mean and mean what I say."

There are a lot more people out there since August 2003 who are saying what they mean and meaning what they say because of him. If there's any information on contributions to be made in his honor, I'll do my small part to post it here.

It's just so damned sad.

Christ, that's a shame.

His writing was the first human voice I heard on a blog, coming to all this a bit late, and what a wonderful voice. I keep feeling worse about it as it sinks in. It's just too sad. I learned a lot from just reading his blog, and damn I miss him. What a battler!

my favorite post from Steve was the day after Bush was "re-(s)elected" in 2004: We Fight

Oh, I'm so glad you reminded me of that one! It was superb!

That's terrible news. He was a name I always recognized, probably one of the first political bloggers I heard about. I didn't know he was ill. He was far too young.

A fighter. An awesome antidote to wingnuttery.

It's not a good thing that the likes of Malkin and Goldberg are breathing a little easier today.

Fudge.

My favorite post of his that I can find is An Honest Conversation. He also did a great analysis of what a withdrawal from Iraq would look like. He had notated satellite photos and explained in language anyone could understand that there isn't going to be any easy exit from that place without a meticulous regionally-negotiated political settlement to go with it. That was at least a year ago. You still can't find anything even close to that in the domestic corporate media today.
