One Last Go-Round for the Bigass DVD Database?

Guy Pearce and Danny Huston in The Proposition, the last movie I watched.

A few changes have been made to the DVD capsule "review" database since the last time it was updated. As usual, the names link to the original entry where the movie was discussed, and the names in the original entry take you to a place where you can get even more info or buy the flick itself. I've removed all of the out-of-10 ratings from this list, but some of the original entries still have them.

With about 200 movies in the database, I thought I'd pick out my top twenty or so in a quixotic attempt to stimulate some sort of conversation. I'll even trying ranking them 1-20 to really cheese people off:

20. To Live (Zimou, 1994)
19. Ashes and Diamonds (Wadja, 1958)
18. The Spirit of the Beehive (Erice, 1974)
17. Hoop Dreams (documentary, 1994)
16. Paris, Texas (Wenders, 1984)
15. The Cranes are Flying (Kalatozov, 1957)
14. All The President's Men (Pakula, 1974)
13. Harakiri (Kobayashia, 1962)
12. M (Lang, 1931)
11. L'Avventura (Antonioni, 1960)
10. Z (Costa-Gavras, 1969)
9. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (Bunuel, 1972)
8. The Battle of Algiers (Pontecorvo, 1965)
7. 8½ (Fellini, 1963)
6. The Godfather, parts I and II (Coppola, 1972/1974)
5. The Wages of Fear (Clouzot, 1958)
4. The Conformist (Bertolucci, 1970)
3. Ran (Kurosawa, 1985)
2. Le Cercle Rouge (Melville, 1970)
1. The Seven Samurai (Kurosawa, 1955)

I may discontinue the whole movie-reviewing and listing function, because 1-2 people giving a shit is not really worth the effort, and that fact may be cutting into my own enjoyment of the movies themselves. If so, then the mammoth list in the extended entry will be the memorial...

maybe you should cut back to like once a month, or only review stuff that was outstandingly good/bad or especially relevant.

i fucking loved danny h. in 'the proposition,' btw.

As one of the 1 or 2 people who care, I hope you don't stop...but given the effort involved, I can understand why you might want to.

I guess I am the "to two" in the 1-2 people who care, cause I kinda do. Or at least am interested.

I was at a beginning documentary camera class taught by one of the guys who did camera on Harlan County, and he emphasized that the #1 job of the cameraman was to not get killed.

Seemed like good advice at the time.

Nononono..don't leave off this feature..give it some time for gods sake..also have you read David Mamet's Bambi vs Godzilla On the Nature, Purpose and Practice of the Movie business..if not, why not? do yosef a favor..could spark some innersting exchanges..

Posted by: bunky at March 1, 2007 04:18 PM

Hmm,never heard of any of these but the man that fell to earth. Was that the one where a space alien falls to earth, meets a bimbo at a bar then a bookstore and they paint canvas's with their bodies in a empty storage shed? Just kidding. David Bowie.. Wild Strawberries and Unfaithfully Yours sound good.

I'm also one of the 1-2 persons who care, and I have made Criterion, if not Norbizness, a little bit richer as a result.

Uh huh, uh huh, I see that you are still refusing to watch Water. What does a woman have to do to get you to check out her movie of choice?

Posted by: shayera at March 2, 2007 12:47 AM

I find the movie reviews a bit overwhelming. If the feature continues, I'd like to see you deal with one film at a time and go into more depth. Give me a good account of the story, acting, production etc. and then provide your commentary. If you can include films that are due to appear on TV or in the local theaters, that would be a plus, since I don't have a subscription service and I'm too cheap to buy a lot of DVDs. If you want to go off on an occasional rant about the state of the industry, that would be OK, too.

Posted by: Charles Watkins at March 2, 2007 01:38 AM

The only reason I don't give a shit about the movie reviews is because I do give a shit. Er. What I mean is, you've seen many movies I haven't, and I don't like spoilers. I know, most cinefiles don't care about spoilers at all (at least, that's the conclusion I've come to after asking on a Usenet group recently), but I do. So I avoid reading your reviews and blurbs just to avoid spoilers.

I love movies. I just don't get around to watching enough of them, and I can't keep up with you.

Posted by: Stacia at March 2, 2007 03:27 AM

noticed that "spirit of the beehive" is in our library now. will have to check it out.

Posted by: paperpusher at March 2, 2007 07:47 AM

i'm curious as to how you've avoided Bertrand Tavernier's movies so far, though not a lot of french is on the database. I would have sworn you'd seen "Deathwatch" by now. My personal favorites are "Coup de torchon," the Dexter Gordon performance in "Round Midnight," and "It All Starts Today." Only time waster was "Sunday in the Country." Getting to "Daddie Nostalgie" soon.

Posted by: paperpusher at March 2, 2007 10:13 AM

I care too. You write well and direct your readers toward many great, under seen films.

Yes, The Proposition rocks . . . but damn, you have to get out and see Children of Men in the theater -- a far, far better film than The Departed.

Great, great list. Thanks.
