Your Consolidated Effete Cinema Snob Review Database

In the extended entry, you'll find the most updated list of film mini-reviews I've done over the last 18 months (Format: Title, Criterion # if applicable, director, year, rating out of 10). To access the full review, use the "Search" function to your right or just scroll down the many posts in the Cinema Purgatorio category. I've preserved some of the comments from its last incarnation in December to make it look like there's some sort of interest.

Any questions about any of these? Any leftover kvetching with my rating? Any movies you'd like to see reviewed? In the words of Dionne Warwick and Elton John, that's what comments are for!

i must have missed it - why was "the leopard" revised down? agree on "the dreamers" - probably appeals only to guys in their 60's who cling to that one wild summer.

waiting on your take of bresson. ritchie's commentary to "au hasard balthazar" induced a spit-take from me - after throwing out various interpretations of bresson, he throws up his hands early and says, in effect, i can't explain it.

and "fanny and alexander" has made it to criterion. hint.

The Au hasard Balthazar commentary is pretty damn priceless, but it's one of the most obtuse movies ever made. And this is from someone who watches Tarkovsky for fun. Which isn't to say it isn't good...

Norbizness, your list suggests you haven't seen any Lubitsch, which if true is most unfortunate. May I suggest Trouble in Paradise?

Try "The Householder" from the Criterion Merchant Ivory collection.

I love Amarcord, it's not Fellini's best, but I'd give it at least an 8. In your mini-review, you seem unaware that the events all take place within a single year and thus the stories are not followed to the end. The comment about scatology is strange, he's remembering (North) Italians, not Americans who hate to think that they poop and pee. Also, more than 8 1/2 and the others, it's a film that is enhanced if you can understand Italian. The two scenes of the bonfire and the family dinner are unbelievably good. Make that at least 8.5.

You call those great films? Those aren't great films! Now this, on the other hand, promises to be a great film!

I'm opposed to your rating of The Dreamers; the rating for high brow pornography is at least a 4

Impressive list. My personal favorites on there (of the ones I've seen, obviously): Z, Throne of Blood, The Lady Eve (only 7.5???), The Godfathers (well, duh), Kagemusha, and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse.

Is the 5 for Slacker the score you would impute to hypothetical non-Austinites, or an actual score from an actual non-Austinite? Because I would probably give it an 8, and I've never been anywhere near Austin.

Still surprised by your Godardophobia. As a wise commentator on the French New Wave once said: Ne detestez pas le joueur, detestent le jeu.

You seen that Russian flick that's all one shot? Let's see your Scorsese, your Kurosawa do that!

I'm disappointed to see that you haven't reviewed Big Trouble in Little China.

Also, I think you've seen more movies in the last 18 months than I have in the last 18 years. Outstanding.
