I won? That deserves a phone card!
It's Dr. Strangelove in a rout, much like the Houston Rockets' destruction of the Orlando Magic in the 1995 NBA Finals. In that spirit, here's a column from one of the last living principals from that film, James Earl Jones (Lt. Lothar Zogg) on the 40th anniversary re-release of the movie. It touches on his own participation in the Korean War (much to the consternation of his father and to family friend Paul Robeson), as well as some interesting thoughts on the director:
In spite of having been stripped of the lines that made the role attractive to me in the first place, I felt very fortunate to be working with Kubrick, one of the most brilliant and innovative directors of our time. He was unique--the only man I have ever known who spoke in the manner, if not the accent, of an English lord and chewed gum at the same time. Stanley was unfailingly polite and even-tempered on the set. After every take that didn't work, even the 100th, he would say nothing more than "Let's try that again."
He may not have all of his laugh-out-loud lines cut from the film (although I still crack up when he innocently asked "Anybody seen Major Kong?" right before Slim Pickens is dropped on Russia), but dammit, he can make you think:
Human history offers little evidence that we can learn to stop fighting wars. But we cannot stop trying. As Stanley would say after every take that didn't work, even the 100th, "Let's try that again."
You know, printing these exist polls just discourages people from going to the polls.

Posted by: j fyrste at April 22, 2005 03:24 AMthanks, norbizness. that was fun.
Posted by: paperpusher at April 22, 2005 07:52 AMas for james earl jones' column, it was a solid effort. not great, but not terrible in and of itself.
but since it was on the edit page of the wsj, home of the crazy dolphin lady nooners and those jealous of the "lucky ducky" poor, it was remarkable.
gigot and his myrmidons must be on vacation. that's the best reason i can think of for it running without a slam at anything to the left of reagan.

Your mileage may vary.
And there is not enough comment spam about 'fucking' here for my taste, so step it up, Norbiz!

Was it JEJ who said that in the movie? I thought it was one of the nondescript skinny white guys on the plane . . .
